The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
Director: Jim Taulli
The Young Theatre, California State University Fullerton
Set just before the first world war, this production of Earnest used the buttoned-up nature of 1913 fashion to enhance the whimsy of the play. Each character subscribes to their own particular definition of fashion. Algernon dresses in rich, comfortable blues, emphasizing his love of fashion with every piece he wears. Jack, on the other hand, dresses practically, not keen to stand out like Algy does. Cecily and Gwendolen are opposites, the former wearing a soft pink flowing dress, while the latter’s more structured gowns show her as a lady used to city life. Bracknell, overbearing matriarch that she is, is stuck in the past, her large, dark colored dresses emphasizing her bombastic nature.
