Director: Maria Cominis
The Young Theatre, California State University Fullerton
Set in 1813, this original adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein focused on the darkness of Victor’s ambition and how easily people can fall victim to hubris. The show begins with Mary Shelley at Lord Byron’s house reading the beginning of her horror story to the men in her life, presenting her entry in their competition. She then serves as narrator through the show, set apart from the cool tones of the other characters in her red gown. Victor himself takes on the stereotypical Frankenstein green, keeping him separate from the rest of his family whose blue/grey palette betrays the tragedy of their narrative. The creature scavenges clothing as he travels through the world, knowing only through observation that he should cover his pallid body, as he was left without the guidance of his creator.
