Children of Eden by John Caird and Stephen Schwartz
Director: Rufus Bonds, Jr.
The Little Theatre, California State University Fullerton
Based on the first few chapters of the Bible, this is a musical about creation, family, and finding your own way. Act One follows the story of Adam and Eve, their life in the Garden of Eden, their fall from grace, and the murder of their son Abel by his brother Cain. The Storytellers, effectively the narrators of the show, spend Act One in beige and white costumes that were inspired by various ethnic groups from around the globe. Adam and his family were in modern clothes inspired by Biblical silhouettes. The Snakes who tempt Eve with the apple were based on Bob Fosse, and had their oily nature revealed by green ink oozing down their bodies. Act Two follows the story of Noah and his family as they wait out the flood upon the Ark. In this show, different groups of people were dressed in different ways. In this act, the Storytellers and other ensemble become people of the world in full color. Noah and his family are set apart from those more traditional ethnic clothes by again using more modern silhouettes, and not as many bright colors.
